"Olivia Stone and the Curse of the Changeling"
The thrilling conclusion to
"The Guardians of St. Giles"

is
OUT NOW!

The Guardians of St. Giles is a gothic, sharply funny, and darkly emotional fantasy series for readers 10+, but with layered themes that resonate strongly with adult fans too. It follows Olivia—a girl with scars who is slowly turning to stone—and her band of misfit friends, each with a disability or difference to overcome, as they face monsters, magic, and inner demons to save their world and each other. Think Coraline meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with just a touch of Stranger Things sprinkled in for good measure.

"I have spent a great deal of my career working with disadvantaged youth, and children with disability. I have found there are very few literary heroes these children can relate to. Most do not look, act, or even think like them. My quest, through my stories, is to create heroes these wonderfully inspiring children can see inside themselves."  Jeffery E Doherty.

WORDS

A child asked Neil Gaiman,
'I want to be an author when I grow up. Am I mad?'

Neil replied,

'Yes. Growing up is highly overrated. Just be an author.'

I truly believe this. It is how I try to live and the underlying message in a lot of my writing.

'Believe in the magic and keep your inner child alive!'

Writing Projects

Grayce McAbe - A Girl Who Talks To Ghosts
Picture
My latest piece of short fiction is The Clockwork Mouse, a Victorian ghost story with a subtle steampunk air, written for the Creative Kids Tales Collection Volume 2.

There are some marvellous stories in this collection which made the note from the editor during the revision process so much more special. Two simple words at the end of the email – “Editor’s Choice.”

Grayce lives in a clockmakers shop with her grandfather and the ghost of her brother Perry. In the story, she discovers a little magic and solves the mystery of her brother’s death. Not bad for 1000 words.

I think I’d like to explore Grayce’s character and give her some more words on the page. So her story is being expanded into a Young Adult novel, "Clockwork Souls."

Paper Magic

Picture
My first book, 'Paper Magic' was released by IFWG Publishing Australia in late 2013.

It is an adaptation of my children's story, 'Marina Mack and the Magic Paper' which was shortlisted for the Charlotte Duncan Award for Children's Literature in 2009.

'Artists and illustrators are different creatures. Illustrators tell a story with their art.'

Before I became an illustrator, much of my artistic works featured children and animals and I held a successful art exhibition 'Bless the Beasts and the Children'

Now that I work as an illustrator I find that I still paint children and animals, with the odd monster thrown in for good measure.

I have illustrated
  • Part of the teacher resource package for Sandy Fussell's CBCA nominated book 'Polar Boy.'
  • Cover illustrations for  'Literature For Kids'  and 'SQ Mag' on-line magazines.
  • The cover and internal illustrations for my books 'Paper Magic' and 'The Guardians of St. Giles' series.
  • A collection of bedtime stories, 'The Adventures of Teddy and Karl'
  • I'm now an illustrator for IFWG Publishing and SQ Mag creating book cover art and internal illustrations for them.

My favourite medium to work in for illustrating is watercolour, but I also use pen and ink, acrylics, oils, pastels, coloured pencils and digital art, using a stylus and graphics tablet to paint.
